As we begin work on our environmental-styled theatre showcase – it’s sometimes good to get some all round perspective on things: This World of Ours is no exception .
It’s easy to switch off from the globe and all its problems , easier still to think , that kind of thing doesn’t affect you , so why bother about it ?
Other people, other places , other countries …far away and never in mind .
I get like that too. I sometimes forget there’s a whole world of things happening around me and they slip by unnoticed , unless someone draws my attention to them or I happen upon them by chance.
Like tonight .
In the search for something to watch, a documentary film caught my eye.
This changes everything
The title was enough to prick my curiosity… and the subject? Something I have begun to take much more seriously over the years , especially when I too became a mother.
Climate Change is fact . Climate Change is affecting and will continue to affect us all , until we decide to do something about it.
But what can you do that doesn’t involve too much of a youthful dramatic change , at this stage in your lives ?
What can any of us really do …to try to make, even a tiny difference ?
Seeing films like this sometimes helps. It reminds us that we have to pay attention, no matter how old we are .
The film moved me in many ways. And although many of the films locations were far far away , the message was very clear : Climate Change is coming ever closer to home .
Never more so than when I watched the section on Greece , a country I love to visit , for its sun , its food , its people , its Zorba !
Seeing this country depicted less as a popular tourist destination, and more gripped by an environmental invasion through terrible austerity, was quite upsetting.
I think what made me feel even sadder was how very fortunate I was , not to have to face that here.
To not only have to face poverty through financial hardship , but also to face your land taken from you as well , and not through war , but through greed , must be a soul destroying experience.
But what was so great about this film , was that although the overall visual messaging appeared bleak …there was the ever present sound of hope …people all across the world are fighting back , people who have nothing are standing up for the right to live in harmony with Mother Earth. And that made me happy.
Nature is a wonderful thing . It’s everywhere around us and it’s free for us to share. It asks nothing of us , but we just learn to give back in kind.
If we continue to just take from nature , then the consequences for our future will be harsher to face.
Taking note of what is going on now may make a huge difference to us all in the future and for the youth of tommorow who are yet to come.
I’m not saying watch the documentary. Of course it would be good for you to see, if you are curious ?
What I’m maybe saying is , pay attention to what is going on round about you.
That peripheral perspective we always speak of …
And though it’s not drama culture , it’s about a social culture of more caring thought.
There are many organisations out there , full of wonderful, inspiring , selfless people , all dedicated to the care and attention of these world affairs
Friends of the Earth
Too many to mention in just one post …
Sometimes however , a single seemingly simple event …can trigger a change of mind in those who take part that leaves a lasting impression. Something to remember to try to do , to remind us of a bigger planter connection
EARTH HOUR is a good place to start.
Each year this world-wide campaign , this global event , sets out to heighten environmental awareness. It connects many just by asking you to do something as easy as switching off your lights and remembering the planet for just an hour.
Seems easy enough ? but how many sign up ? …the list of excuses is potentially endless , everything from its pointless to ..its just ridiculous !
But is it ?
Is it pointless to think of the planet and what we can maybe do to change our environmental habits , in the tiniest way …to help save earth for the future ?!
Is it ridiculous to think we could face super-storms , flooding , heat waves , smog and drought much closer to home?
Our seasons have changed …might they be gone all together in the next 10 years if we just keep assuming things like climate change are never going to happen ?
Is switching off your lights for an hour going to make a difference ?
Yes , I think it will …if you switch them off and think about why you are doing it … Then it makes a huge difference to how things may go in the future . Because you start to care.
Changing peoples mindsets is never easy. But small acts of random thought , like random acts of kindness , can connect into a bigger culture change …in time.
Positive Action follows positive thought . And next time you go to the bin to put a plastic bottle in it , you might think , I’ll put it in the recycle one instead …I’ll continue to do that and it will make a difference to the environment I live in .
Your one small random greener act , helps cut down on huge rubbish landfill sites , and gives back a little more land to the Earth , to let things grow and flourish as intended ….
One bottle in the recycle
One extra light off round the house next time you leave a room.
It all adds up , it all makes sense , it all builds a better world for us to live in , in future .
If you want to know more about earth hour , check earthhour.org or #earth hour, they have ideas and information on how you could spend that hour.
We starting doing it in our house a couple of years ago . Not all the family do it ! Some can’t leave their tech world to join in ours …but heigh ho…it’s the thought that counts and 2 doing it , is better than none…
I think this year if it’s dry outside , we’ll go light the fire pit , toast some marshmallows and sit with a big blanket on and star gaze …nothing better to remind us that there’s a much bigger place out there …a universe that we are only just beginning to understand
A bit like climate change …
On a WHALE note …
Sedna may have trapped the Whales in our play because she was angry at Humans for what they had done to her.
But the story is the same all over the world …we need to listen to what the environment is telling us . We need to stop thinking it’s not our problem. If teenagers in America are suing the United States Govemrnment for Climate Change issues not being dealt with ; then I’m sure you could start thinking about your environment as a real thing , and not some issue to just think about when you’re much older.
Why not join the World and if you can , try and come up with some good ways to spend earth hour too . Might take a bit of persuasion for others to do it with you but even on your own is a good enough way to show you care
So even if you are solo at Earth Hour , or sharing it with friends , or family under the stars …your thought goes out and Into a beautiful planetary bigger picture
And one day ” this changes everything”
