BANKSY has it right . Throw flowers at misconception and misinterpretation …be bold and expressive , in you own reason for doing things.
You know : People would think young people don’t really care about things , least of all ” broadening their artistic horizons ” – best to leave that to grown ups they might say.
Yet they’d maybe be saying wrong?
They’d be missing the point of any culture, by far .
You need it young . You need it to grow bigger , brighter , enlightened for the vastness of your future .
It’s all very well doing the galleries , travel , theatre , concerts , operas , ballets and finer dining when your older , but if introduced to it earlier , in bite size pieces …how much farther could society grow as a whole in later years ? How much more open would we be with each other in more fulfilling ways?
Culture should be taught in schools . It is wrongly assumed it would be a waste of time .
You can hook anybody in , even the most ante-it , if it’s delivered in an exciting and less formal way .
If it’s made more hands on , “tastebuds” on , role played and acted for better understanding .
The History Boys* by the genius playwright Alan Bennet is one of my favourite stage plays and film adaptations , for cultural awareness with Youth .
It tells a tale on two levels
Firstly the class of sixth form boys and their struggles of being themselves in an all male environment and particular period of their transforming lives .
And secondly and more importantly , how culture, in its most broad-based form , of which DRAMA is a part , enhances learning , connects all things across the curriculum and prepares you better for further education and for the rest of you life .
It is a bitter-sweet storyline . Misunderstanding, weakness and the human condition , always getting in the way of genuine goodness ; but this aside , it is interesting how they react more openly with one another when they are taken out of their usual school life and given the chance to talk , debate , philosophise and find their own means of self expression – to pass on their passion for communication , for the random other more creative stuff of life.
If you get the chance to see it , you’ll have to keep an open mind ; don’t be put off just because it refers a lot to the Greek Classics , to English and French Literature and of course the parables of History; it centres round the boys preparing for their Oxbridge ( Oxford and Cambridge ) entrance exam , the elite programme of further higher learning , that accepts only the best of the best, to study there, or as we discover with one of them ” if you happen to be , better connected ”
The Riot Club ( another great film ) deals with a whole different side of that hallowed world of further education , and is also based on a successful stage play called POSH by up and coming brilliant playwright Laura Wade.
Another play/ film “worth a watch” , but again , know that it deals with mature and hard hitting themes
At least the history boys remembered their cultural awakening , even if , as we discover at the end of the film , their lives did lead them in very different directions
( *there are some mature themes in the play/film , so make sure you are ready and able to watch it – to better understand their relevance in the bigger picture of the context of the play)
Like all film recommendations we might make in class , you have to sometimes be emotionally ready or at least mature enough to understand why themes are aired . And if younger , it goes with out saying ” parent – allowed” .
There is a reason Disney and Pixar are for younger audience , but even films like UP and INSIDE OUT try and go deeper into emotional understanding , which may allude a 5 year old , but may touch a questioning 12 year old in a whole different way . So don’t think there isn’t merit in watching everything .
Your generation are certainly maturing quicker , being exposed to more at an earlier age through SOCIAL MEDIA sites
Is this a good thing?
Mmmmmmm jury’s still out …and only time will tell how society and humanity will transform, through this early exposure to the world and all its dark and light. Anybody’s guess …
Once you open PANDORAS BOX , you have to assume HOPE will still be there , to come out , and , if need be …save the day.
Any Curiosity, after all has its price to pay ….
But let’s hope tomorrow’s doze of “curiosity” will have “everything coming up , roses and daffodils” ….( ‘ scuse the random line from GYPSY the MUSICAL )
For tomorrow we let our minds drift “peripherally” , our tastebuds tingle and our creative spirit be lifted by some perspective and good , down to earth , friendly culture-banter!
You’ll have got the email sent about what to expect , probably panicked , and then realised, its actually not that bad ?!!!?
Some love chatting
Some love film
Some love food
Some love quiz
Some Shakespeare in love ?
Some ….lovin’ that guy BANKSY
A gentle 4hour ease into “another way” , taking the road less travelled in Spires , and becoming all the performance different from it , in time .
No pressure tomorrow , wear something warm and comfy , and no need to come in knowing loads ( just enough to talk ) because you will need to talk , no point coming , if you are going to sit in a corner all remote and silent . No point at all.
Culture club/ Cubs, has to be for “the love of talking” …about things , anything , random things , everything..
This time there’s quite a few of you invited; maybe next time, it will only be for a smaller group , who kind of get it a bit more truthfully and not just because you think you have to, because VAVA said so …
Let’s see what tomorrow brings then…Let’s hope you come away thinking :
I’m going to look up more in life and start to really notice things
I’m going to watch that film I heard about , I’m going to try and not just pick what I usually watch
I’m going to read that book or play someone mentioned ,because reading the book/play may make me think more about the words , than just seeing it acted in the film version – make me listen in another way.
I’m going to go visit that place , I’m going to do it in the Easter break .
I’m going to try that food again , because actually ….it tasted good !
I’m going to put that piece of music on when I’m studying , cause it helped me relax .
I’m going to remember those answers to those questions I didn’t know , because I might be able to surprise myself and my parents , in future by knowing what they mean.
I’m going to watch out for Banksy images , I’m going to look at street art in a different way – appreciate the message.
I’m maybe going to start listening to or watching the news occasionally .
I’m going to realise that this thing I’ve been afraid of isn’t that big a deal after all …it’s whatever I want to make it and that puts me in control, not my insecurity about it .
I’m going to feel drama smarter in the space after midterm , I’m going to not be afraid to answer , express my opinion and hear my voice rise above the silent crowd .
Because I’m going to know so much more . And one day , even be someone , who can call themselves “a little cultured ”
See you on the flip side
