I feel an ice berg coming on ! Not just because one show case is set around the Arctic, but because we have 2 showcases to get ready for May .
The reality of the gargantuan Task has just sunk in , as if casting s for both shows and worked out the rehearsals .
Now 2 things :
Firstly the Casting
Much as I would love to give every body a big part . I can’t. There are only so , many parts and so many people to please!
People pleasing is a no go for drama , so I’ve just cast as I think it will work best for the limited time we have and hope that in seeing your casting you don’t necessarily jump to ” small actor mentality conclusions “, because others seem to have more .
There’s no small parts only small actors We know the saying well by now , but you need to believe in it too.
You need to know that with even one line , you can steal a show . Presence is everything , presence a creative attitude and bags of drama spirit.
I’ve said it countless times before . But I will always give more to the triers in the room l than I ever will to the moaners.
The moaners bring the drama space down . There’s only one place for them and that’s outside with their best pal ” the EGO ” .
Please don’t bring either moans or an ego to the rehearsal- space from now on – it will only end badly . Bring an open mind , a full spirit and the opportunity to grown through whatever role you have been given . Because I know this is right for you just now, and something you have been doing in the room for the past few weeks has guided my decision .
My gut is seldom wrong in casting matters , when a face pops into mind, it stays there . It may be you are perfect for this part you will play .
It may all change however when people see the rehearsal schedule
Nothing is set in stone and we may need to move people around if they can’t make dates.
On the REHEARSAL SCHEDULE
Don’t panic ….
It’s not going to be all those times …
Any schedule has to include all the possible times we are rehearsing .
It lists all the dates but NOT , who will be needed yet .
This will become clear after your first rehearsal. When work is broken down into scene groupings
WHALE differs slightly from TROJANS in this respect .
Both are ensemble pieces with cast on stage all the time and occasionally adding into the action
But WHALE has more a continual flow feel , like the nature it shows
TROJANS is more scene to scene in terms of play progression – a bit easier to rehearse in cast isolation – the Youths on the Ramparts / peace protesters are more of a constant presence , they can be added more into it as we get closer to the final block stage – with the other parts I have been careful to try and keep s4/5/6 together to minimise rehearsal time for them . Their scenes are mote contained.
This has affected casting a little and I would have liked to have included more of a mix throughout , but thought it easier to keep certain Age groups seperate for areas of rehearsal work .
Trojans will only mean more time for a few , and for people who are generally not in exams yet – I’m confident however they will be able to manage the extra time fine.
I hope to have a good bit of the play blocked by end April and it is relatively short and self contained enough to bring together for our showcase acting night
So please don’t freak out. And feel you have to pull out . You may find that you are used very little and will be able to mange this easily . It would be great to include you . You’ve worked hard this term and deserve a little Stage – Time, even amid your exams ( if you use Easter hols wisely ! And keep up to date with study prep – a social life may have to go ! )
WHALE has a little more pressure attached , as we open first . However you will see from the cast list that there are very few parts and way too many people . I will have to be more creative in how I stage this , to give everyone a good performance experience . Again I ask you not to become bogged down in thinking you have nothing to do . You will be part of a lovely ensemble piece of acting and that will be more than enough to satisfy you , I promise .
Odyssey will complete soon and then there is nothing till June . There will be back no Odyssey sessions programmed through April / May and so all monologue work and devised scenes must be completed in your own time – see it like preparing for a solo drama school audition !
I suggest you work on pair scenes a little during the Easter break , maybe get to know one another in a more social setting . If In rehearsals together for other things , you can use the time you are not being used to work stuff out . It shouldn’t take that long . Or you can wait till after the showcases to complete this work .
The foot comes off the VX1 pedal during the showcase rehearsal period . House Dorectors will be aware of other commitment and rehearsals will be optional depending on how much you are being used for the showcase work.
If you have a smaller part this might not be a problem at all .
I have stopped VX1 before we move to pre – production week for both shows . This is when exams are likely most concentrated.
After both Show Cases are finished ( around May 22md ) – Verona will start to accelerate again as you begin a Verona only rehearsal schedule. It will be crazy again for a couple of weeks in June depending on your level of involvement
If you are only in one part this may not be very much . If in all 3/4 , more intensive .
Let’s not Stress about this just now . Let’s just get the show case work started and take it from there .
Anyway – Stress is theatre juice , performers thrive on it
Everything is HYPOTHETICAL till you see casting and the schedule . Everything can be worked round I’m sure . Everything will be done to try to include you as much as possible in all that’s on offer with whatever time you have.
Which brings me back to that ICEBERG
The Bit underneath is the difficult stuff to deal with :
The balancing act of life , school , pace
The keeping on top of everything
The not falling out with parents over rehearsals
The not bringing the outside into the space
The not panicking , stressing or moaning
The need to work fast
The need to really focus now
The want to do well
The learning to work with others in a shared common good
The things that suddenly matter , that you should already know
The passion to Act !
Show business can be TITANIC at times but really , really awesome in the END.
I’ll look forward to seeing both casts at their usual sessions
