Another show to maybe change your drama mind ?
Date: Thurs 18 February, 7.30pm
Venue: Paisley Arts Centre
Suitable for ages 7+
Creep into the post-apocalyptic world of one lone, feral creature, starved of both food and friendship. With only a patch of soil to call her own, she must be ready to seize every small opportunity that might fly by…
Enriched by a detailed and subtle soundscape that is performed live, Bird is a timeless tale of friendship, courage, magic and madness.
Bird is a one woman show devised by Sita Pieraccini and set in a vast, desolate world created through inventive use of clown, mime and seamless work from foley collaborator, David Pollock.
It’s what we see that changes us , and when we see new things something else inside our mind clicks into place.
We don’t always have to like the things we see , but we have to open ourselves up to the possibility that seeing at all – might just make the difference .
This theatre show doesn’t look instantly appealing .
The title a little too short and strange , the image kind of abstract , the colour dark and weirdly uninviting , the face…seems …lost in arty translation….?
And the pine cone ? What’s that all about ?!!
Read what is there for you to see :
Sweet , wry , heart rending ” ****”
Visual signals that mean a little more …but are they words that make you want to go ?
Because there is something alluring in that title , for what are we , if we don’t want to fly in our creativity as young artists .
What is a bird if not free to soar ….?
Is bird ,not then a metaphor for drama ….?
And in the “abstract” of drama things , we always find difference , a difference we strive to find in everything we do here in Spires.
To be unreal , to not be everyday , to let our imagination take us places that few rarely go, for fear of the Unknown, the Weird , and the decidedly Different.
All creation starts as abstraction; as strange , and as misplaced, as we want to be …so as to find the theatre of it all.
Creation is disorder , it’s unpredictable and random. It has no logic but bizarrely finds its own sense of rationale, in the minds of creative others.
Peter Brook, One of the most innovative theatre-makers of the late 2oth century said …
Abstraction moves you ….
And if we believe this to be true , as theatre people ourselves , then surely the abstract is not weird or strange to us?
… surely in all ways, it has to be our sense of reality ?
Our logical approach to the unreal of drama.
Making a creative reality that can see beyond what appears dark and uninviting , that can pick out pattern and form in the composition of a lone female figure in a hat , holding a pine cone
Can hear that NATURE is at play here ?
Can see the textures of wood , fur and earth .
Can smell the outdoors where she stands observing the delicate seed of a tall tree , wondering,
” how it all began ?”
Perhaps as the performance artist herself wondering
“who is brave enough to come watch me play , curious to take a closer look , wants to see beyond the obvious , the everyday of it all ? ”
Friendship , courage , magic and madness may be the by-line to this theatre tale , but I think you could get a lot more from this play , with a better pair of drama eyes.
It’s not always the big budget show extravaganzas that leave you gasping for “theatre encore ” and though the recent RSC WENDY AND PETER, was a colossal theatre delight , that many had never experienced ; it is often the small , empty space nothingness of the solo performer that makes you really appreciate what it is to call yourself a performer
To stand on a stage with little “but you” , is the test of true courage and inner belief . No tricks , no set , no flying to spin on ….
Performances Art is a relatively new concept for many of you. And even the House Directors for Verona have had to find a passion for this , that probably never had any meaning , other than a vague notion of its surreal content.
But they , like me , have quickly learned that there is more to PERFORMANCE ART than meets the eye.
There is theatre in art , and there is art in theatre .
Sita Pieraccini is a performance artist , someone who believes in the art of theatre and the theatre of art.
I mentioned before she was once a young PACE member with a flair for performing , someone who just instinctively knew what to do when she walked on stage .
Some of you still struggle with this , the “what do I do?” of it all.
Sita could be herself onstage , because herself was always abstract , creative , powerful and alluring .
She saw life upside down and inside out . She could light up a space just with a smile
It comes down to something as simple as , you and a creative space , in the end.
What you can do , with little else but you and what you need to make gesture , emotion and action , into entertainment ?
I think this show will be sweet , because of its youthful spirit
I think it will be quirky and come out of “left field” in its delivery.
… and most of all I think it will make a few of your hearts beat a little faster, even if for a moment, as you maybe connect to her passion for performance , for her presence out there , in that big empty space we call home.
We are taking bookings for this trip now . Contact Colleen ( firstname.lastname@example.org) to secure your place.
We are also offering a follow up “performance art” workshop experience with Sita for 15 PACE members who attend the performance.
For those of you keen to extend your repertoire of theatre acting skills , this is something not to be missed.
The workshop will be on Sunday 21st February from 10.30-2pm .
Places will be allocated shortly after the performance itself. Please let Colleen know if you are interested in attending the workshop when you reserve your theatre ticket.
With LOVE CULTURE DAY on the February horizon , this is a great month for seeing a whole new side of theatre to help your drama wings stretch and your inner BIRD to appear…
