They will ” kill ” me for these pictures but it was the only “conceptually abstract” Art way I could think of , to announce this year’s House Directorship Teams for Verona 2016 : VX1 Verona Comes Home
House of Capulet
Director : Abby McCann
Depute Director : Garth Finch
House of Montague
Director : Eleanor Farrelly
Depute Director : Cameron McNee
A not totally unexpected decision I’ll warrant; when you think of the countless years of Verona and PACE experience between them all , and the undeniable performance ability they display in every Theatre project they are part of – a drive that few consistently show – coupled with practical team leading/ artisic direction experience , 100% all round PACE commitment and focus , topped off with a mature creative intellect and a more genuine passion for the Arts – you can surely see why I didn’t have to look too far for my Verona leadership inspiration.
It’s not easy to direct a Verona Challenge Show and this year 2016 – as we enter a new decade of Challenges – the difference had to be in an artistic ability to adapt to “something new” whilst still repeating the tradition of the past in terms of excellence of delivery .
Both Cameron and Abby have the longest experience of any current Verona member – undertaking their first Verona challenge as much younger members of Spires Theatre School in 2008.
That experience shaped their lives and they would both say was a turning point for them , from which they would never look back.
Both Garth and Elenaor followed later but still have a Verona Heritage that ultimately shaped their PACE destinies
And now these 4 stand poised on the edge of new House glory.
Although many will envy them , no one knows how hard it is going to be for them , how much they will worry and carry the weight of so many others on their still young shoulders.
No one knows how already with Part 1 of the challenge delivered and 2 further parts to follow , they are already having to make a grander effort to research , visit , seek out exciting vibrant potential creative inspiration , to motivate an entire different House generation !
It’s hard enough reading this blog and attending an occasional theatre event or culture club ….
…but to have to create an entire production from scratch with Art , Theatre and Culture at its heart – is not an enviable task , unless you are mature , self disciplined , well rounded creatively and at a stage in your life when you can cope with this enormous extra pressure along with Highers , Advanced Highers and the rest of your life.
No it’s not easy to become a Verona Director , but it is probably the most rewarding experience of their PACE lives
To bring a group of their peers to an excellent Performance stage , to motivate , to teach , to nurture , support and inspire them to greatness , is going to set them up so much better for their lives.
It teaches them that respect is better than popularity , that by creating Art , they are creating themselves and in a world of feeble copies – it’s wonderful to be original !
I hope you take the time to congratulate them on this outstanding achievement below in a short heartfelt comment or two…
…if already a member of a House – assuring them that you will work gladly with them – that you won’t allow any prior personal feelings or “petty jealousies” or insecurities to get in the way of the good of Verona 2016.
I hope you will be able to bring your own special talents and creative flair to this process with them too.
They will need you – their SPACE friends , their HUB of potential , their 15 up up and away …
and the NEW …they will always need the “newbies” to add their magic touch – the ones waiting in the wings to begin their PACE Voyage , their Odyssey , their Endeavour through Being a part of Verona
Verona is coming Home this year – Paisley Home – Paisley City of Culture 2021
And our muse is the Turner Prize 2015 – currently in Glasgow’s Tramway Theatre till January 17th .
Those involved in VX1 should definitely visit it before then to understand “the unusual feel” of PART 1 , of the challenge, this year. An opening to let the audience know things are going to be different.
Channel 4 has a programme on the Turner Prize entrants for this year – it’s on Monday Dec 7th 7.30pm ( search for it on catchup TV if you miss it )
And if all else fails GOOGLE it. Knowledge is power and definitely in VX1
It’s a whole newlook Verona from now on – 3 consecutive nights of different entertainment and a 4th night of celebration and prizes including the Verona Challenge Cup !
Two Houses – Capulet and Monatgue – still alike in dignity , but in a new age Verona where we play now our bi-annual Festival Scene
“Show me something new” says the Turner
“Show us you care” say I and please say a huge well done to these 4 fantastic branches of the PACE family tree , that will only grow stronger for you to climb on from now till show up . That’s there promise in accepting this Very big crown.
