So I thought a little bit of imagined “subtextual motivation” for your first stage delayed entrance, might make you feel important.
Carry it characterfully with you from now on and even in one quick audience look , you will make a better first show :
The cast begin to clear …..
F9/10/12/13 enter as if they have been hurrying .
They carry 4 baskets filled with Rosebuds ,
Madame Gilbert (The palace house keeper) turns to her maids ….
acted song fully
<< And where were you? >>
F9 ( Camille )
… We were gathering flowers Madame , you know how the princess loves flowers!
F12 ( Cerise )
…especially from her wild meadow,
F13 ( CoCo)
…and from the little pink rose tree that grows there…
F10 ( Claudette )
…she says it reminds her of the special nature of all things around us…
..the tiny pink rose buds , that stand so proud , even where people least expect them…
…She says people often miss the simplest things…
“those tiny details that are just there , in a picture perfect way”
F10 ( Claudette )
She says some guests are only drawn to the grander blooms ; by those rich reds , dazzling oranges and golden yellow flowers in the prized palace gardens…
“And whilst they are certainly eye catching, ” she always tells us
” ….from wilder meadows , a different beauty will always grow…”
( finishing her sentence )
…if you take the time to patiently wait for their special flower to show … ”
( adding in , to sound even more important )
She says , the Queen once told her…
(butting in before her sister COCO can )
“There is always magic in unknown places , where anything is still , there ”
( correcting her …)
( smugly getting one up on her sister)
Possible …its “where anything is still possible ! ”
That’s what I said …
No you didn’t …
( annoyed at her )
Eh bien COCO !
( quickly in to stop any further trouble …)
So that is why we were late here Madam …
( shows her the basket )
…because we wanted to pick ces quatres paniers , for her special day ,
( dreamily )
…we wanted Rose to feel , as loved ….
( looking wistfully at the roses )
…as these rosebuds…
( exactly together )
…growing in their special place .
( respectfully )
For our cherished Princess …
( Smiling and agreeing with her maid “prodigy” )
…is a Rose without a thorn …
(Smiling whole heartedly)
… our kingdom’s treasure , since the very day that she was born…
( Suddenly and very dramatically )
A wild, untold beauty trapped in a cursed spell life , waiting to be spun magically free .
They all momentarily stare at her …as if she’s quite unbelievable !
We know it sounds like a fairy tale!
…but in this tiny flower ,
is the, happy ever after…
..she would wish for !
Tell us where to go?
…What now , to do ?
( looking at her with sweetest eyes)
…let us please sing with you too …
Looking at her fellow maids em>
We are ready to co ordinate and play our part …
( moving forward as one )
…to share in this feast of fun ….
They dance “joyfully” on , to join a waiting POM , FERN , CLOVER and MARIGOLD
Welcome finally to the Panto stage ( put this imaginary , more panto-dramatic subtext , into action tonight
Ps – this doesn’t mean you will say these made up lines , it just will help you form an idea of a character to use , to make a bigger dramatic impact , as you appear from behind the Flat as it moves away
General note :
Every actor in any stage production needs to know ” where they have just come from , as motivation for where they need to get to in a scene “.
Even in humble panto it matters , it just makes the acting , ” and your own performance ” – much more believable and watchable in the end .
Thank you for your continued , “patient professionalism” over the last two rehearsals F9/F10/F12/F13!
