Careful ! We may start liking this.
Trips that is …the journey Into the unknown world of Theatre , that suddenly makes the culture penny drop …makes you go ” ooo! and agh! ” when you realise there is a whole new world of creative delight outside your PACE bubble
And that’s what many of you are still in – a bubble – sealed off from the bigger OUTSIDE.
I always think when I come back form a really great trip to Theatre of any kind
” I must start doing that again ”
It’s easy to let your self slip , let things go a bit , get stuck in a creative rut
Bit like watching the same TV programmes – easy is as easy does …
Once you step out your ” comfort zone ” anything can happen .
And despite a cramped and possibly uncomfortable minibus journey to Stratford upon Avon last weekend – we will see great things happening because of it .
Will’s back in our lives – not Jack , in case you are confused – but Will Shakespeare
I forgot how much I love him. I let myself slip. I intend to right this drama wrong – in PACE time , once other distractions are past and we can settle to learning again – to school ourselves in the art of the Bard.
A moment on the Dell stage , forced or otherwise , put a group of Youth right at the heart of this town’s identity .
All for the love of the stage
I think you sometimes forget that .
Drama is all for the love of the stage
It’s not for confidence – you can get confidence doing pretty much anything ” better”
not for friends – cos friends are the intermittent family of time
not for anything , but the entertainment of others ….
Our true intent is all for your delight – a qoute from one of his comedies ” Alls well that Ends well ” – the title appropriate methinks !
Alls well that is going to end very well for any of cultured mine , who let themselves get to know the power of this playwright , who learn to use his texts for the good of their acting , who remember that he was both rebel and voice of reason – humanitarian at heart . Who knew more about the human spirit , than humanity itself
Lady M , Hamlet , Falstaff and Prince Hal may rightfully grace his Stratford monument , but there are more delights in his other characters waiting to be found
We have always had a bit of Shakespeare in all we here Spires do
Aren’t we Verona’s 2 Houses – both alike in dignity ?
Or a bit of “O for a muse of Fire ! ” ….that we voice in times of necessary ” PACE passion”
Some PACE-born …great , some achieving greatness , some more often than not , having greatness , thrust upon them
We are such stuff as dreams are made on I do believe this is true . Will not waver in my artistic goals for you as performers , because of this …
It’s a brave new works indeed , a brighter space to be part of …
It’s going to be hard to go back to ” same old same old ” when your eyes are lifted to new dramatic heights , when it seems easier to access that culture Word , with a little more effort and future PACE group consideration
Black is the colour of my voice was a very good place to start.
Tribe – whatever it will be – will give some who missed out on last weekend a chance to dip their youthful toes into different theatre waters ?
Dragon might even spark lost interest , maybe rekindle a flagging performance flame for the future….
I can’t tell you how good it was to get back down to Stratford with a group of young people again .
I don’t want you to think I’m “rubbing your noses ” in it – because I don’t see it like that, I see it as a way of letting you hear how good it was , so that you can join us next time. So you are envious because you care, not jealous because you think you missed out .
It was great , it was something that few will ever get the chance to experience fully without being there, but it was more importantly a way of letting in the light again; The light we all need to find , when we struggle to find creativity in dark well worn PACE places.
What was most telling for me however was the complete lack of knowledge about Britain’s most prolific playwright by this small Group of people who profess to love acting and theatre – an ignorance born of lack of opportunity maybe – but probably more to do with effort to find out – whose fault that is , is surely now our question !
Maybe leaving Stratford on Saturday night – dramad-out they were a little wiser , more mature in their outlook , more connected to a truer British theatre picture… Certainly more classy in their approach to performance I think , from here on in – because they saw what it was like to be part of the top – and we’ve Leigh Quinn , to thank for this .
The guys in the picture above certainly thought we were something – some thing special to be part of – in that place.
So special , they wanted to share in our sense of theatre. A sign , of things to come?
Volpone was a foxy experience unlike any other – Restoration Comedy – acted both ways ( superb and with some youthful notes on how it could be played better – because even now many of you are starting to recognise that body issues will always dog an actor, even an RSC one , that garbling voices lose plot quickly for an audience and that “playing the gallery” is important , only when trying to reach those standing in the ” cheap seats ”
I can’t wait to work on Shakespeare , to explore the History of Drama with some of you again. To stage something special for a will-full 2016 place .
It won’t be for all – this learning process – it won’t be , because ” to be or not to be” is a question best answered when you mind your Shakepseare.
400 years on , the Swan of Avon is as ” drama hot ” as ever and I for one Intend to celebrate that , with a few , a happier spaced few …a band of Youth brothers …
“Once more unto the breach dear friends …once more ! ”
