No not the 70’s Rock band. You , when you start to take this project on another level.
You’ve got about 6 weeks to show you have fhe focus , energy , determination and most of all Perfomance ability to be presented for a PACE/ UWS module this September.
From today’s induction ” letting go ” session I can see a few Firefly , already buzzing round like PACE bright lights; you see that’s what Fireflies do , they light up dark spaces with their creative glow
Creative glow is just being willing to share more passionate expression with others
Predictability – is having an idea
A Leap and a Stretch – is being Creative!
Subtle difference , but the difference between doing it and performing it.
Maybe in hindsight you get that now , the understanding that for Firefly entry , it’s all about the ” performing ” , even in the room as we do the workshop exercises – the drama therapy.
The fact I make you speak to the group and not me – to get you used to confronting an audience
The fact I make you perform with very little time to plan – to encourage you not to over think or process
The fact I force you to think laterally , outside the box and not be so obvious in what you see and hear in the room – to help you become more alive and alert as a performer
Everything from here on in , is to prep you for student led PErfomance work – the group needs ( to qoute Gregor – ” oomph ” people ) not sitter backers , not the silent or scared to speak for fear of being put in their ” imagined ” place
The group needs – GO GETTERS , positive energy people , the can – do , no problem attitude , the energetic and committed , even to the most seemingly ludicrous of ideas
Do we have that ?
Yes I think we do , in a good handful already.
So be proactive in taking this forward now for yourself.
You are , and if in Firefly , will be a group effort – but always you are the individual going for a pass in this module.
Start your own PInterest Board called ” Still Life ” – post things that occur to you about the mood , nature and cultural themes of PURPLE, as you journey togehter through the next few weeks.
This will help you visualise your understanding of things and bring out the cultural artisic side of you even more – when you pin – add your own comments , don’t use the comment of another Pinner; keep your board about you ( I’ll click in occasionally and look at your ideas )
Pinterest drama project boards are good ways of letting me see the you I sometimes don’t see in the room – we Amy even use them for future module assessment procedure.
Everything you post should have a direct relation to the project though – keep it specific and not too personal!!!
If you can’t do Pinterest – keep a diary or a journal and write your progress – some people prefer writing as a drama therapy for feelings
I’d start a group chat with your LILAC or LAVENDER mocks. We have one for remote and use it as a way of communicating info and work related things and also for bonding through a commonality – don’t make it social – keep it purely about sharing things that may be useful for your ” Showlet” – avoiding using text speak and smiley face syndrome – trying writing ” real ” even in a text/ message format.
Culture will come at you thick and fast over next few weeks – in an effort to unlock your mind and to give you a few more intelligent doors to open on stage – remeber what I said about staying ” plebian” – creative intelligence comes in all forms – it doesn’t mean yiubauve to be good at maths , science , language or English – but it does mean you have to want to learn more ” laterally ”
So based on our mentioning them , take a quick look at :
Tracy Emin ( warning risky! )
Damien Hirst ( controversial )
The Turner Prize ( Art-World Oscar )
The Tate Modern ( where and what is it ? )
John Byrne ( playwright of our time – Paisley born and bred , famous artist too )
Already you are smarter with even a passing knowledge of these things.
(BYT – You never know where having this knowledge may come in ” future ” useful – don’t close the door on your potential by being LAZY)
Thursday will be another theatre/ culture session , with David/ or me .And some mock group time too. David and I are interchangeable in this respect , as we both see culture as an invaluable part of learning .
I want you to work on the following idea, so come with ideas
For the opening of your MOCK I need you to begin with the idea that learning about Paisley’s Cultural Heritage is a bit like the route we recognised in the room today ( courtesy of Mhairi Gilbert’s PACE theatre installation.)
There is an innocent start ( flowery/ novelty mug ) where we know the town as a place to do PACE but not much else.
Then we start to grow from things we do ( usually as PACE in SMA shot ) and we know a bit about the SMA shot ( even though we probably don’t )
Then there is an OMG moment where you find out something really astonishing about this great cultural town , something you never knew before and it changes you in so many ways and you make a choice to be more serious in your understanding of the place and its bid to become the UK City of Culture in 2021
You then are Inspired to promote this place through your PACE endeavour , engaging as a great artisic PACE part of the vibrant culture of this amazing ( not dying ) town and the rest my buddy lions , is future cultural history
Get the picture ? Get “the leap and the stretch” you will have to make for your MOCK.
Start thinking ideas for this opening and show progression.Plan to hear some on Thursday ( saturday walk-about will help you shape the theme direction )
Some will more easily , my advice to the rest, is just go with the Creative flow and learn along the way how to be better, how to CREATE.
And if this doesn’t appeal , or you feel this challenge is too much , then I suggest emailing me :
…and we can sort where you can go this term instead – to keep more engaged in PACE.
It’s all easy if your as passionate as you say , and if “being serious” just means taking your drama more seriously in and out the space.
I should say that if you are selected for Firefly 15 – some Endeavour could potentially be in the module group with you – and this will doubtless help from a PErfomance ” oomph ” point of view.
But you want to be ” on an equal footing ” creatively don’t you? You want to be confident in your own sense of drama and not led by your fear.
This Mock short module experience will help.
Trust me , I’ve seen how people can change very very quickly – once their drama ” mug ” penny drops.
Saturday “walk about” details will be emailed seperately to you this week
Relax, it’s all good.
Onwards and Firelfy upwards!
P.s – Don’t be afraid to Commment.
