Get ready for something special…
Joey has finally come to Scotland. Even if you have not seen the film version of War Horse, which isn’t really like the play you will get to see, this production could change the way you view ” theatre” forever.
In a previous blog I said how mesmorized I was by this National Theatre Production. It is now in its 4th year of a run – so successful was it’s appearance on the West End Stage and it is one of those shows with mass appeal ( a “Wicked” for Theatre Acting) that will probably run and run. ( Just like Joey!!!)
The Festival Theatre in Edinburgh is a very different venue than War Horse first appeared in – it’s home is the New London Theatre in Drury Lane. One of the most famous theatre streets in London – that’s where I saw it first staged and I was fortunate to get almost front row seats so could almost feel like I was right there , in the paddock, in the field and the trenches – with each and every character.
Our seats for PACE’s first theatre trip ( in a while) are a little ” farther back” – but let us not let this stop us from taking ” Joey ” into our hearts.
This is the only show I can safely say, where I tearfully emerged from the theatre, proclaiming that ” an animal, albeit a puppet ” was the best ” actor ” on stage.
I fell in love with a horse – in the 2 hours that passed in a joyfully dramatic instant!
I really hope that those who are going on this trip ” open their hearts and minds ” to the possibility that Theatre can be as simple and engaging and emotion stirring without the elaborate trappings of the Musical Stage.
For those working on National Theatre text work this term within The Spires Theatre Scene – this is an opportunity for you to grow – culturally, theatrically, vocally and emotionally as young actors
The National Theatre really ” do it best” . And for you and National Theatre Connections – past or present – this is the first time you will see ” acting” and not ” performing” .
I need you to embrace this style , to try to look at every part of it with ” better eyes”.
I need you to think that you could do that too – with your plays.
By believing you are connected to the War Horse actors – even just in NTC name – you will lift yourself higher , mentally, physically and most importantly Vocally !
For the rest, just sit back and let Joey take you on the ” ride of a life time
From his first tentative foal like steps to his grizzly and barbed end – your heart should be in your mouth
I won’t spoil the final scene – it is enough to say – don’t look at me – I will be sobbing into a well worn tissue….
And isn’t it funny that my previously planned ” final Heritage music ” is the finale to WAR HORSE – coincidence or fate ?
Great minds think alike ….
See you on the theatre bus!
