As we begin sorting out the “who does what” of PACE and the RIGHT START auditions begin for the vast majority of last years Spires Theatre Scene ; it falls on me to once again consider that Christmas Cracker – oh yes it is ….PACE Panto.
Everyone wants to do Panto at some point in their PACE life.
Every better STS journey , sees you move up the chorus ranks and into good theatre projects post Christmas. It is a rite of theatre passage for many.
But although this year we have a host of new talent waiting to tread their first festive boards , we find ourselves a little bereft of experienced pantoers , who are ready to step up to the challenge of leading and inspiring a team through a professional run.
It seems S4/5 exams this year has removed a lot of ” usual suspects ” off our established casting board and as yet we are still waiting for several people to reply to emails sent , to confirm who is returning and who is leaving PACE.
Team Leading in Panto is a huge undertaking in terms of personal performance and professionalism – some may be good performers but not as confident as workers , others confident as a worker , but still addressing their performance barriers.
The creative marriage of the two is needed to ensure the “Team” are lead successfully and inspirationally , through the lengthy rehearsals and run.
Normally team leaders emerge for me through other acting projects , this year this has not necessarily happened and I am as yet unclear as to who may be ready for this challenge.
PACE Panto , despite what many assume , is the hardest PACE project of the year, it demands a stamina and professional attitude that is hard to achieve without concentrated effort by those who choose to participate. Team leaders have to be the best of the best in this respect.
We are lucky this year to be returning to the magical drama of ” Beauty and The Beast ” – a Victorian affair that will contrast well with the precision of Russian ” Matryoshka ” last year’s successful run of Mother Goose.
Beauty and The Beast, will be a characterful Panto and maybe this is where we should begin our search for our team leaders , once these bright “characters” are in place , the team castings will follow
Every Panto team becomes a defined stage personality and matching casts to leaders is part of the process.
If you are at the stage where you think you are perhaps ready for this kind of challenge and one of this creative enormity , then we need to hear from you- you can email firstname.lastname@example.org and she will pass on your details to me.
You must have been involved in Spires Theatre Scene work in 2014 to be considered and have reached a certain performance standard to merit consideration. Experience of recent Panto work is essential. Chorus 1 involvement only .
There is no decision yet as to how the leadership will work , I may have joint Team Leaders , a solo Team Captain , or a team leader and a deputy leader. This will depend on who is available and how the teams are structured.
Panto auditions will take place very soon and I may ask some people in to work with some of these potential cast members as a practical audition process.
Panto is always hard to manage with exams, but with better time management it is sometimes a way of focusing study work with the added element of rehearsal. November is always a pressured month for rehearsals , once Panto is open and running , things settle and become easier and hopefully more enjoyable for all.
One thing to bear in mind, you will never be liked as a leader if your team is ever to be the best, you cannot be a friend of the cast and expect to be able to lead effectively – there has to be a distance between you and your charge to get the best from them – some will never understand this and so never truly inspire.
Read the quote I posted with this and if you can relate to its meaning , you stand a good chance of being the person I am looking for ….
With this said , I look forward to working with my team leaders this year , a challenging prospect lies ahead , but what Panto has never been daunting when names appear on a register , the proof of success , lies in the director and the team leader.
