When you see a qoute like this 3 things possibly flash through your mind.
1 oh it’s another quote.
2 oh it’s another qoute, I better read it…
3 oh …that’s so me!
Qoutes like pictures create an image , sending a visual signal to the brain that sometimes has a deep reaching effect on the recipient.
Pictures are instant, their story is plain to see – friends in a group , a view , a new outfit , a self portrait in time.
Qoutes , a collection of words , take more of a creative challenge to deliver.
They need cooperation from the viewer to enact their emotive power, they need more effort to understand.
This qoute , the one you may or may not have read above , used to adorn the walls of a ( at one time ) red painted Spires 1.
The words come from a play by William Shakespeare called “Twelfth Night” . A funny and sad tale of lost siblings and love. Shakepeare magic again, a play to read when you ‘get’ that he just wanted to entertain his audience.
The words are spoken by a ” clownish ” character called Malvolio – a pompous , but not bad character who misguidedly at times , thinks himself ” a cut above” the rest.
His tragedy , if one can call it that , is that in the end he realises that not everything in life goes as planned , that sometimes things that we think are for us , are just never meant to be.
In the play , he mulls over the 3 statements in a famous speech around which the crux of the play revolves. He is for all intents and purposes , a pivotal character , a turning point device for good or bad…maybe even the a future sign of his road less travelled?
“Some are born great , some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them …” he says and then picks his destiny , through the words that most inspire him for his characterful purpose.
And we like good old Malvolio, have since taken his lead and adopted Shakespeare’s words into our everyday language and made them one of the most famous “quotes” of all time.
But what do they mean for us and why paint them on the walls of our drama building?
Perhaps we could say it means :
To have natural drama ability
To gain drama ability through circumsatnce
To be drama enabled …through more golden opportunity
Yes this qoute was on the walls of Spires 1 for a special reason. It hoped its drama throng would see their future unfold before their very eyes – in PACE – through innate acting ability , or necessary cast action and eventhrough a chance performance.
Any “natural ability” is a rare and precious thing. The best at anything are few and far between.
We all have to work harder at most things in life , and sometimes need a little helping hand to get our foot on the invisible ladders that exist in every walk of life.
But in all of us , will somewhere ‘lie a pearl’ , that with careful polishing could make the world ” our oyster .
Finding the pearl is the challenge , knowing who we are and what we’re good at takes time , self discipline and maturity.
The temptation , when young is to want to do it all , spreading ourselves too thin to gain anything substantial at all.
But how does this relate back to the qoute ? Surely this ” MG pearl of wisdom ” laid carefully before you , has some eventual dramatic conclusion ?
It does , in time …
For doesn’t shakespeare also say : “though this be madness, there is method in it …”
My method comes in many mad disguises and you have to be open to it all .
Take the title of today’s blog for example. The Scores on the Drama Doors.
These Scores are like qoutes , they are visual signals sending messages to your brain that could have a profound effect on your personal drama progress
Which type of score reader were you I wonder?
1 Oh. It’s random numbers on a Mhairi type page.
2 Oh! There’s my name , a number and some drama words on this sheet outside spires 1…I better read it…in case I’m asked…
3 …Great ! It’s my progress so far in this project, It’s so good that someone’s taken the time to give me some positive direction , a helping hand up the PACE ladder and on to the next stage of the quest to find ” my pearl” in life . I’m going to read this , note down my target and work towards achieving it by November.
You see, at the risk of sounding pedantic :
Like number 3 …some are just born great, they naturally know what is good for them and their talent. They seize every opportunity presented to them and grow in all directions through the things that are placed around them : the challenges, their artistic struggle and the creative struggle of others , the fellowship of like minds in a common drama quest for greatness.
PACE as an organisation seeks to help youth discover who they are, to allow them to express themselves in a safe environment,
to address insecurity and to find ways to create ” a better ” more fulfilling life.
PACE is a door to the future , a portal to self discovery , a way out and in to fulfilment.
The door you choose to go through in PACE can vary in size and opportunity, little doors , safe doors , happy doors , scary doors and for me Big Dramatic Red Doors.
The important thing is you go through the right door for you and that what you do here helps what you do outside because School and PACE should go hand in hand – they compliment each other – a balance of learning through education and Art .
That’s why PACE is primarily a Theatre in Education Company.
In this Panto cast there are probably 10 who are just naturally great performers , probably only about 20 in total , currently in PACE
These naturally gifted people , these PACE pearls , love the stage , the place they feel most at home , free to be who they are – quite often shyer on the outside because they are ” more sensitive ” by nature , than those that maybe prefer to “show off” who they are in their other life.
We all wear our masks …whether you wear it in PACE or in SCHOOL is your dilemma.
But there are also about 40/50 of you who could potentially become great at drama here ” if you only read the signs that are posted for you on a rehearsal basis ”
Signs that come in all shapes and formats
Team leaders supportive advice

The Director’s inspirational blogs and meaningful Qoutes .
Like Jess said last night in the room : the way you will get better is to LISTEN to the notes given to every body else and to make them a part of your own performance
Notes make the drama world go round and if you don’t take them and ACT on them – you will not get better , you will never – achieve greatness here.
I like to think this cast will perhaos achieve greatness eventually , that one team will perhaps be born from this struggle – Great !
And as for the rest …
The ones who have greatness “thrust” upon them…
This experience is a golden opportunity for you to maybe learn that good things are never easy to come by, that effort is needed to ensure you don’t miss out on the better things in life.
That being a part of projects like this in PACE will change you, in ways you don’t yet understand , but that 3 months from now you may suddenly realise , what a truly wonderful time , what a truly amzing company of youth …you had the privilege to be part of …
And that will be GREAT ! That will be great , because this PACE PANTO opportunity will not have been wasted, it will be remembered for the next time you are brave enough …to want to try harder at life.
Everyone should go and look at their scores again .
It’s a SIGN!
Look at your grade and don’t see random numbers , don’t see empty words – see the present , see your target but most importantly of all …please see your ” own qoute ” for Greatness!
Your PACE future depends on it , now go get it before it’s too late…
