A rare talent has passed away. Now , a whisper in the stars …
Robin Williams was his name , an actor of great worth …and the theatre world is a lesser place without him.
His films will be known to you all:-
The voice of a Latin American penguin in Happy Feet , the genie in Aladdin and the wonderful Mrs Doubtfire , are favourites among his younger audience…
But look to his other work and you will see the true talent:
Good Morning Vietnam
Good Will Hunting
Dead Poet Society
And the fabulous – Birdcage
Here is where his genius lies , to make us laugh and cry in a single breath
Something in his eyes , his smile , his honest and engaging delivery ….
That is why there is none like him , or probably ever will be.
“Dead Poet Society” is one of my favourite films and for the work we do in Theatre School it is the beacon to every acting heart …
Just recently I used the memorable lines he spoke as “Mr Keating” , the English teacher who inspired a class of boys to “seize life” – to suck the marrow out of it , to sound their “yawp” to the world …
You would have to watch the film to understand this , to not be afraid of being different …it is one of those films that touches your soul …especially if you are ” creative “.
The lines are from a Walt Whitman poem ” oh Captain , my Captain ” – they have been used countless times in theatre school work over the years , they are universal and never lose their power to move a generation :
“Oh me …oh life …of the questions of these recurring
Of the endless trains of the faithless
Of cities filled with the foolish
What good amid these ?
Oh me…oh life
Answer : that you are here.
That life exists and identity
That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse
That the powerful play goes on …and you may contribute a verse …”
What will your verse be ? ”
No where is this more true than in our Spires Theatre Space .
As we look to the start of a new PACE year , we ask ourselves …what will our verse be ….what do we have to contribute ?
We can only inspire those that understand the need to be ‘better’ , we can only ever ‘be better’ when we stand on top of our creative learning desk and look at life from a ” different ” perspective
Shortly we begin a great theatre project , one that any “Dead Poet Society ” would be proud of …
You will be lead by 2 “Nuandas” …and will sound your creative Verona “yawp” to the greatest stage.
I think Robin Williams would have liked Verona , I think he would have liked the craziness of it , the artistry , the chaos and the brilliance …the beauty of its Art.
What house he would have been , is anyone’s guess…
The creative world will miss this actor , his family and friends will miss the man , but in the films , like some of the ones I mentioned above , there is a message for us all …
“Carpe Diem” – act now , and the future will take care of itself.
Here’s to “Mr Keating” , his legacy lives forever on in Spires ..
…and another PACE class get ready to stand on their creative desks , ready to seize life and a golden future !
“Oh Captain , my Captain …I am ready …”
