We recently took a group through to Edinburgh to see the NT performance of War Horse – what can I say? I am still in utter amazement at how amazing this piece of theatre was. I had heard great things about it but (if I am honest!) it hadn’t really drawn me in – until Edinburgh that is. I don’t know if it was the astounding puppetry, the amazing story telling (including the beautifully ‘sung’ links connecting scenes) or the realisation that this is based on true stories of what happened to these magnificent creatures during the war that drew me in but I was involved from beginning to end (and that hauntingly beautiful anthem) – never once did I check my watch or look around to see what everyone else was doing. I am now totally hooked and would never tire of seeing this again!
If you haven’t seen War Horse yet – don’t worry! National Theatre are actively trying to encourage new theatre audiences by bringing live theatre to you – making it affordable and accessible! The performances are shown live via satellite from London’s West End to cinemas throughout the UK – the closest you can get to a live performance without actually being there!
War Horse is being shown in virtually every cinema in Glasgow (GFT, Grosvenor, Cineworld, Glasgow Quay) and also at Braehead and Showcase Cinema in Paisley (there are other cinemas which may be more local to you – check out the link at the end).
The tickets are reasonably priced at £12.50 (there are various ways you can get cheaper tickets i.e. 16+ check out the Showcase Insider Scheme. 15-21 yrs check out the GFT Youth Card – these are free to join and you can get discounts and loyalty points making it even cheaper to experience theatre closer to home).
The Live performance is 27th February (with an encore performance on 2 March). Anyone in STS projects or with an interest in theatre should go and see this. Would be interested in hearing your views if you do!
Curious Incident of the Dog in the night time is coming to a cinema near you in May – definitely another one to see (I am going to see the last 10 minutes as I missed the end!)
