It isn’t folly to be earnest about PANTO
Not feeling ” silly ” about being ” serious ” about any performance opportunity, is always going to give you more personal gain in the long run.
This run of PANTO 2014 will allow many to gain : more self confidence , self awarensss and even self expression through more imaginative involvement, in the Creative Performing Arts.
Will it make you act any better ?
Difficult to say…
Are you wanting to act better ?
Or are you just happy to go with the flow and see what ” Panto ” tomorrow will bring …
A tomorrow , that may give you a greater understanding of what you are, as part of PACE.
Acting is a harder game to play – there can be none of you in it, but ironically , all of you in it.
More of YOU to see , but less of you , to see YOU worry about.
It’s a finely balanced “state of play” , needs a very confident mindset , a (and I hate to use the drama cliche ) FOCUS that few actually have at this younger stage, but appears sometimes like gold dust , when you happen to spot it early on, for then we can work it, before it goes by unnoticed.
“Panto Diamonds in the rough” if Aladdin is anything to go by…
But we are not doing Aladdin this year …we are about a Beauty and a Beast!
And which are you I wonder ?
(And let’s not get bogged down in youthful angst about your ” Looks ” here.)
I’m talking about DRAMA.
Which side of the dramatic fence do you fall on?
The Beast’s : who hid himself away, for fear he may ” cause a scene ” with his fearful appearance…
Living underground , in the shadows , a secret life , half lived , half shared, afraid if what might happen if he showed his ” truer ” colours .
Or Bonnie’s : ( our version of Beauty ) who travelled the world , lived in the glow of the sun , embraced life with every fibre of her being , sang , danced , brought joy and fun to lighten up those around her.
Being true to herself and always passionate in her method!
This is real beauty …not just the outward appearance of ” a face ” we feel we have to show- to fit in, to feel safe …to survive the crowd .
Inner radiance lets personality and individuality shine and that my Panto cherubs – is acting STYLE.
Now, we could draw a pretty PANTO metaphor here couldnt we ?
“Be beauty or be a Beast …”
But I don’t want our few PANTO ” chaps ” to feel they are bound to be beasts because the word Beauty implies ” girl ”
Beauty is a state of aesthetic being ( a big word for “something that is pleasing to the creative eye” – a thing that touches our senses , our Artistic Souls!
How beautiful for us – to see you all shine , how pleasing to our drama eye to see your creative personality and artistic individuality so stylishly displayed – in the rehearsal room and on stage.
Have you never heard me shout ” beautiful! ” in the rehearsal room before?
Well maybe you should listen harder, it might make you feel better about your performance.
Beautiful says everything about passion for the stage in Panto – to see a room FULL of Youth intent on pleasing their audience with their inner radiance shining through, their confident personality and stylish individuality – is quite something !
Could it be , that you are a beautiful PANTO cast waiting to sparkle ?
That beats a beastly performance any day!
Our Beast is good ! Deep down , beneath the mask , beyond the perceived unsure facade, somewhere through the baggage of excuses, we often make for not really trying – there beats a dusty heart of Gold.
We’ve all been “a bit beastly” at some point in our PACE lives, and I’m not just talking about not being very nice to others.
I’m talking about being a bit Wee sleekit cowrin ‘ timorous beastie in our approach to our performance !
Hiding away , scared to reveal ourselves , fearful , secretive, closed off and defensive through a careless attitude – all in order to protect our “fragile ” ego.
To forever hang on , to the things , that keep us down…
Beastly behaviour…the stuff that makes others ” fearful ” of us in return and why many give up – before they even get started.
In all seriousness are you now ready to step out your ” shadow ” and into the Panto spotlight ?
On first “show” – TEAM 2/3 are likely contenders, team 1/4 a little harder to tell…still too dark to tell
But I think there is light, at the end of every performance tunnel – that’s what team leaders and Deps and team mates are for – to show you the way….
First Impressions do matter in the drama space – because we need to read your performance intentions very quickly, in order to direct you better
Holding back will only hold you up.
There isn’t time to doubt your self – performance is as instant as the striking of a match.
If the match doesn’t light first time, you are going to lose your drama way.
Even for those I have , who should know better – matches aren’t just for newbies , they need to be struck afresh by experienced panto cast too.
The slight Fizz and Pop I saw in the room was a bit disheartening to begin with , but less about the “new” that were trying and more to do with People that I know can do better making an effort to EARN their place.
I don’t give these words out lightly…they are meant to send a message to others to step up to their performance mark.
Looking out over a see of faces and catching the eye of someone who connects with me on a more BEAUTIFUL creative level , is worth more than the practised and same styled delivery of those who assume they have their performance – down to a TT.
No one should ever feel they can’t do better, that they have “arrived” as a polished performer ( unless producing continually outstanding solo performances to back that up )
Complacency is the last gasp of the drama directionless. The only way in drama is “down” from here on in.
This “complacent drama beast” …should really be kept under lock and key.
“he will eat you up for sure ! ”
If you are struggling to get into Panto this year you have two options…
Stay or Go
The first is harder by far , because it will ask you to be mature in realising that harder work is the only way to reignite any stage passion.
The second, easier by far, is just, to walk away.
Whatever way you go, you owe it to others in Panto 2014 to make your choice quickly.
Better to leave now , than in a few weeks time when blocking is down and team mates creatively dependent on your presence.
But maybe I’m just being dramatic …maybe the room was hot , people were tired , maybe they had little sleep the night before rehearsal , minds were elsewhere , on other things , and the realisation that Panto 2014 was upon us – hadn’t quite in “all cases” registered ?!
I’m going to let you mull this important and beautiful Patna blog over before Sunday 5th October.
You see I want the casts that join me that day, to be in this for ” good ” – for aesthetic “perfection”.
UMPAPA UMPAPA that’s how it has to go!
This is MUSICAL THEATRE after all…what so many of you love
Everyone knows things’ll go better
” when you go Um Pa Pah!!!”
