The things that are the easiet in Panto , often really baffle people; plain and simple seems confusing, a hidden catch perhaps or too straight forward not to throw a drama curve?
The truth is, sometimes, easy is there for a theatrical reason.
Take Bread …I like bread (my hips have probably enjoyed too much of it over the years) all that crustiness and comforting crunch, layered with salty butter, sweet jam or savoury cheese( my other food vice) – agh the very thought of a sandwich has me dashing to the bread bin.
But what I like most about BREAD is – it’s easy, unfussy , straightforward and totally satisfying, when nothing else will simply do.
Now why is the block of SECRET SMILE like bread – what possible dramatic link can I make in this blog to help you join up the musical creative dots ?
To make Bread …
Step 1 – knead dough
Step 2 – let it rise
Step 3 – bake it
Step 4 – voila! ( c’est si Bon )
To make Performance
Step 1 – work the stage
Step 2 – fill with light
Step 3 – craft it
Step 4 – present! ( that’s the TT factor !)
It takes few ingredients to create bread – flour water , yeast and maybe some olive oil
It takes few drama skills to make this song work – smiles , energised bodies , focus and maybe some good old self belief !
and you’ll make good BREAD and your “secret smile” will follow
A smile is universal and the first thing we do as a baby to help us connect to the world – parents wait for it with unbridled excitement and can’t wait to utter the words :
” he/ she smiled at me !”
Sometimes we forget how to smile, forget how to be happy with the little things : the being with others, the giving moments , the joy at seeing others smile back
A smile’s is a sign your spirits breaking free…
Now is it not better to let us see you’re alive with a smile than to see you weighed down with what seems , the cares of the world
Natural ENERGY , my panto friends , ENERGY , FOCUS and Festive PASSION brings a smile to the stoniest of chorus faces.
To just kick your heels up , give it ” UMPAPA” and twirl around and around “like a silly thing” is the Christmas stuff that makes us stage noticed , stage watched , stage presence-full!
Why do you think old Scrooge felt the overwhelming impulse to dance when he awoke on Christmas morning ?
Could it be he was relieved…released…at last care free ?
Happiness , Joy , Elation – moves the body , it needs an OUT – and did you know that the root of the word ecstatic comes from the ancient Greek word EXSTASIS ?
ex meaning (out of ) and statis meaning ( place )
To be ecstatic is to just BE “out of place” – your inner spirit broken free of its external physical bounds – moved to another dimension and a smile maybe the first show of genuine self escape.
(Those Ancient Greek Greek relations of ours had it totally sussed way back in whenever and ever!)
But KEEP IT UNDER YOUR HAT , we don’t want this secret getting out till panto time.
Just keep it team safe by remembering that it is often really easy to make a panto number work , by simply smiling.
“Drama friends” like us should stick together in this , no need to fall out over a bad rehearsal lesson now hopefully learned: Tired and flat doesn’t make you smile , tired and flat makes you SAD ( so anti-drama! )
Knowing when to move on with better drama ways is the the thing to chase your rehearsal demons away.
And you’ll be :
SUPERCALIFRADGILISTIEXPEALIDOCIOUS – in 2/4 time !
( Now see how many Christmas PAnto words you can make out of that then ! )
Oh yes …and pass us the redcurrant jam someone …I feel a new Christmas Panto number coming on !
( ps – you’ll never know if you like it – till you try it !)
