So it is upon us!
Verona Time – let’s go….
The challenge is hard – but then isn’t it always… ?
Why call it a Challenge if you can’t sweat over it – can’t utter those words “we can’t do this ” ” not in the time” ” not with the cast” ” not in a month of Sundays!!!”
Challenges are there to kick start your ‘creative brains’ – it is the culture that makes you a more rounded and classier performer – smooths out the rougher edges and gives you real drama substance.
Every year we think – oh no…can they? Is this perhpas a challenge too far?
And then we remember what has gone before – the great shows – the amazing directors – the unbelievable vision of young people who believe nothing is out with their reach …
And then we understand – it is just the right challenge – this time…
A Challenge ? What has it been? Let’s take a walk back in PACE Verona historical footsteps:
2005 – Jack Vetriano – the story behind the frame – Montague Winner
2006 – Shakespeare – The seven deadly sins – Montague Winner
2007 – Romeo and Juliet – an alternative view -Montague Winner
2008 – The Golden age of Hollywood -the Red Years – Capulet Winner
2009- Dante and a Renaissance Opera – Montague Winner
2010 – Aquarius – A space odyssey – Capulet Winner
2011- Edward Hopper – Magpie Man – Montague Winner
2012 – The Artist – so silent a movie – Capulet Winner
And this year ….wait for it ….
2013 – ExostrachiSmenos – a Greek tragedy – ?
Huge cheer erupts from the Firefly crowd !!!!!!
Well “It’s all Greek” to me as my good friend Shakespeare says…
And is not Greek our “heritage” – our theatre heritage that is …and if we start drama again – we surely must start with the ABC of theatre style – and that is – the unique world of the Ancient Greek Stage
So dust down your battered and lost copy of Sophocles’ bloodier Oedipus Rex or the terrifying Electra or desperate Medea or even the more modern take of John WIles – the Golden Mask of Agamemnon…and get down and grounded with the high flown drama of those master thespians – “get thee to the Greek”
Programmes are about learning – who is to say you won’t love this challenge – won’t find your drama passion in the rawer roots of this performance – won’t want to hop a ferry to the land of your theatre birth in the future – once bitten forever smitten.
And you are a Team – 2 Houses – Both alike in dignity – in fair Verona – where we lay our scene …
And the rest – as they say is – ” Escrito in Estella” Written in the stars…
Firefly to shape it
Dragonfly to surround it
Chrysalis to launch it
Bright stars all …
– Go forth and Veronasize!
And of course …May the better House win!
